I.R.F.U. Press Release
It is
Sevens as we all know is a growing phenomenon.
The success of the IRB World Sevens and the
proposed introduction of the new European
Championship, coupled with the prospect of Sevens
in the Olympic Games; augers well for the future
of this game and for which the I.R.F.U must
prepare.
All the major Nations now contribute to the I.R.B.
series and this tournament is regarded not alone
as a strong entity in itself but also as an ideal
vehicle to develop upcoming players for the
professional game.
In Ireland for many years now, the Heineken
Kinsale Sevens has been the lone torch bearer.
During this period the organisation committee and
their sponsors Heineken have taken this event to
a very significant position on the International
Rugby Tournament calendar. Its success in
promoting the game and the Cork /Ireland tourist
attractions has been extremely significant and
highly beneficial.
Sevens Rugby is decidedly event driven and the
need to secure event sponsorship is critical to
the long term future of any tournament. Heineken
and their many other sponsors have greatly
contributed to this uniquely Irish, yet very
international event and long may they continue.
The unique camaraderie of rugby football and
particularly the local and international
dimensions with 80 teams from 10 countries, makes
the Heineken Kinsale Sevens something special in
the Irish sporting calendar. The I.R.F.U wishes
the Heineken Sevens Tournament the best of
success in this and future years.
Yours sincerely,
Eddie Wigglesworth
